Residues of crop protection products in food are perceived negatively by consumers. Consequently, food retailers have set quality standards concerning residues – the so-called “private standards” or “secondary standards” – that go way beyond legal requirements. Nowadays, these residue requirements from the food chain are one of the main challenges our clients are facing daily. Combined with outbreaks of pests or diseases that require additional sprays to maintain the quality of the produce, there are many other factors that leave growers with a high level of uncertainty about where to market their produce after harvest, including erratic weather patterns or constantly changing regulations regarding crop protection products, the availability of crop protection products and associated import tolerances. This was the finding of many direct grower interviews and led to the idea of developing a solution that can predict crop protection product residue levels.
Our first target user is the crop protection decision maker, as they own the data needed (spray data) to make predictions. There are further target groups interested in ResiYou, outside of farmers, such as traders, processors, and retailers, and we are actively engaging with them.
The crops currently covered by ResiYou are strawberries, peaches, nectarines, apricots, grapes (table and winemaking), apples, pears, and plums. The next crop that will be added is tomatoes, and other crops are being considered. Any new crop expansion plans will be communicated in due course. The priority given to a crop is based on the available dataset, the importance of residue management in the target crop, and the potential market size.
In the ResiYou application, users can see the status of the substance – whether it is supported by the prediction model, experimental, or not supported. Experimental means that the accuracy of the residue prediction model is being tested for the specific substance. Unsupported substances are also highlighted in the prediction screen in the unsupported substance section.
ResiYou has been developed to cover products on the market, regardless of the manufacturer.
ResiYou predicts residue dissipation at the time of harvest. Growers can simulate sprays, compare predictions and check compliance with secondary standards. The tool also offers different views based on the user profile – for example, a calendar view is designed primarily for the commercial managers to know which plot is ready for the selected retailer at a given date.
The residues that are present in the crop at harvest depend on the weather conditions on the day of spray application and the intervening time till harvest, as well as on crop development. The ResiYou model developed considers several weather forecasting dimensions and actual past weather for the period.
